You Salute Me: Miss America, Because I Am A Lana Del Rey Master Post
Singer-songwriter Elizabeth “Lizzy” Grant was born in New York City and raised upstate in Lake Placid, the daughter of an internet domain investor. At 14 she was sent to boarding school in Connecticut, which she describes as a “difficult” experience. She attended college at Fordham University in New York City, and began singing jazz, blues and country songs of her own composition in clubs and bars. At 18 she entered a songwriting competition, and while she didn’t win she impressed one of the judges, who signed her to his small independent record label; the demo she made at this label was sent out to five producers, one of whom was David Kahne, noted for his work with The Strokes — he loved it, and told her he wanted to work with her personally. Together they set to work on a debut album, and with a small check from the record label Grant moved on her own to a trailer park near Manhattan, where she lived for a number of years; many of the songs on her debut are set lyrically in those environs.
“Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena”, over Grant’s objections, became simply “Lizzy Grant”, as the label felt she was better positioned as a solo act. In time, managers at the label decided that the name Lizzy Grant was too pedestrian for the sort of cinematic and dramatic music Grant was writing; from Lana Turner and the Ford Del Rey came a new stage name (initially spelled Del Ray, but corrected to Del Rey by 2009). Del Rey’s debut album, Lana Del Rey aka Lizzy Grant, was not heavily promoted; she says the material was viewed as “too dark”, and the record was shelved for two-and-a-half years before a release on iTunes in 2009. It didn’t sell, and was pulled after two months.
After leaving her old label, Del Rey began work on new material, and released a number of homemade music videos from 2009 until 2011, when her song “Video Games” became a viral hit and she was signed to Interscope Records. In the time since the release of “Video Games”, Del Rey has become the center of a great deal of controversy concerning her “hidden” past as jazz singer-songwriter Lizzy Grant, her father’s wealth, and her supposed ‘shaping’ by music industry handlers — she’s since addressed these topics in sit-downs with GQ, Pitchfork Media, and other outlets. Her major label debut, Born To Die, is scheduled for release in January 2012.
